Comparing two injection treatments for shoulder pain

Theme

Adult Trauma

Body Part

Shoulder to Elbow

Shoulder pain is quite common, and about 1 or 2 out of every 100 adults in the UK visit their GP because of it. Even though shoulder pain is a common injury, the treatments that are currently used do not always work.

The most common treatments are steroid injections and physiotherapy. Recently, doctors have started to wonder whether steroid injections really help in the long term, and whether they might sometimes cause problems for the tendons around the shoulder.

Because of this, new types of injections have been developed to help the tendon heal itself. These are called “biologic” injections, and they are made using the patient’s own blood.

The aim of this study is to find out whether it would be possible to compare one of these biologic injections with steroid injections in a larger study.
